Description
Vintage Magnasync Moviola URS tube amplifier. Professionally recapped and modified for guitar use. Ready to play. Mods below. When you buy these stock, you can't just plug a guitar in and play through it. The original input connector was for Moviola editing machines, and isn't a 1/4' jack. In addition, the input resistor network typically found on a vintage tube guitar amp isn't there. So the input impedance isn't quite right. I added the same input network as found on many vintage Champs from the late 50s/early 60s. I added a boost switch on the side, which switches cathode bypass on the 12AX7 in and out. Turn it off for "cleaner" sound (clean is relative on these things) and turn it on for more crunch. I also replaced the out of spec carbon comp resistors. For resistors out of the signal path or NOT in a high voltage part of the signal path, I used metal film resistors to reduce noise. For both tube plates, I used vintage, in-spec Allen Bradley carbon comp resistors to add the sweet second harmonic you can get from carbon comps (but only when the voltage is high enough - thus only useful for this purpose on the plates. There's a good paper on this uploaded to Groupdiy.com if you want to see the tests). Replaced the old, dried up paper capacitors with vintage oil & paper caps. Replaced the old electrolytics with new ones, where required. Added some tiny rubber bushings to keep the side cover from vibrating when you play it. That tends to happen with these if you don't do something about it. Headphone jack works, but it was designed for the old 600 ohm headphones. I don't recommend plugging modern, low impedance headphones into this thing. You could damage either the phones or the amp itself. Someone probably replaced the speaker in this at some point, as it doesn't look like the blue frame original. But it's specced right and sounds like the others I've played. Very quiet as far as these things go. Fun little amps. I dig it, but I don't have time to play much these days and am downsizing a lot of my gear. I pack items carefully for shipping. Like I'd want them packed if I bought the item. Check my reviews. PS: I'll ship this on Tuesday, Dec 3 (auction ends on Sunday, Dec 1) as I'll be travelling. Good luck bidding and thanks
