Description
Classic Vintage Heathkit model W4-AM monophonic tube amplifier, and Heathkit WA-P2 monophonic tube preamplifier in excellent working condition. Both were fully re-capped. All capacitors were replaced with brand new high quality capacitors in October 2024. Additionally, several out of specifications resistors were replaced as well. New power cord, new gold-plated RCA input jack and new banana binding posts speaker jacks were installed on the amp. The outputs are now 4 and 8 ohm only. The 16 ohm output was bypassed to accommodate the new speaker jacks. All work meticulously performed by my professional audio technician Bruce with 60 years of experience. The bottom cover of the WA-P2 was very dull, stained and faded. I had it professionally sand-blasted and powder coated (Spanish Gold color) on 10/2024. This W4-AM and this WA-P2 were mounted inside a wood console. The console was in a living room since new. I bought the console from the original owner's son in Wilson, NC last August. He and I removed it from the living room it had been for over 60 years. There was no top cover for the WA-P2. Because there is no cover (top/sides), the can capacitor tabs are exposed. The new owner should put the WA-P2 in a cabinet or build or find a cover for it. Otherwise, it could be an electrocution or electrical shock hazard, especially if you have small children or pets. The WA-P2 is required to be able to turn the amplifier on. The on/off button is on the treble control. However, you could use a different preamplifier to feed the audio signal into the amplifier. The phono and microphone inputs work, although I couldn't fully test them because I don't have a crystal or ceramic cartridge or a microphone with an RCA output. MM and MC cartridges do not have enough output to drive the phone input in the WA-P2, which was designed for crystal or ceramic cartridges of its day. This would be an excellent set up to listen to 78 rpm records or monophonic LPs. Stereo sources can be connected using a Y RCA interconnect cable. The selector switch knob is a bit loose. It looks like someone tried to repair it in the past. I'll leave it to the new owner to fix it. I cleaned the WA-P2 face plate and knobs as much as I could. They are permanently age-stained. The sound quality is simply amazing. They sound awesome! crystal clear , loud and very detailed. No distortion. No hum. No noise (in my house with my audio system). They run cool. After being on for several hours, the power transformer was barely warm and the output transformer was still cool to the touch. I personally cleaned all controls and switches with electronic contact cleaner twice last month. I cleaned the metal surfaces with Caig Labs metal cleaner and polish. I tested all the tubes on my Jackson tube tester. The output tubes should be replaced in the near future with a matched pair. They tested 98 and 88. Please do not expect this set up to work as if it were new. It is a part of audio history. These are cultural artifacts prized by collectors and vintage audio enthusiasts. They have flaws and are far from perfect. They have many signs of age (64 years). Please be aware that a tube may go bad at any time. In which case, the buyer would be responsible for replacing it. Please no returns. No buyer's remorse. No change of mind. No discounts after the sale. I like salvaging and restoring these amplifiers for someone to use and to enjoy. Thank you for your understanding. Alex. P.S. They will be packed with plenty of solid foam, tubes removed from the amplifier and packed separately for safe delivery. FedEx or UPS shipping, insured. Assembly and user manuals and schematics for both units are available free of charge on the Internet.
